When you are running a rural homestead, growing a successful crop of microgreens is only half the battle. The real magic happens when you figure out how to get paid for getting those greens into your local community efficiently, without sacrificing your family time.

As a homeschooling homesteading mum, I cannot sit behind a shop counter all day, nor do we even have a nearby town to even make a retail shop viable.

Instead, we have built a diversified sales model that relies on simple logistics, community trust, and smart delivering.

If you want to turn your microgreen growing into a profitable side hustle, or seamlessly integrate it into an existing farm offering, here are the four main sales channels we use to keep our business thriving.

1. The Roadside Farm Stand (Our ‘Vege Shed’)

Our very first sales outlet grew out of an experiment. We live in a tiny village of about 80 residents, but it is a major weekend destination for tourists, fishing trips, and holidaymakers.

Because our driveway sits right on the main road into the village, we built an unstaffed farm stand to capture that traffic. Introducing…the ‘Vege Shed’.

How it works:

  • The Off-Grid Cooling System: Because our farm stand is completely off the grid with no power, we cannot run a standard commercial fridge (yet). Instead, we use large polystyrene boxes filled with ice packs and insulated liners. This keeps our packaged salad mixes and microgreens crisp and fresh throughout the day.
  • The Honesty Box System: The Vege Shed runs entirely on trust. Customers can pay using cash or via online banking using the details displayed in the shed.
  • The Reality of Theft: People often ask if we worry about stealing. Sure, there is a minor risk, but 99% of people love the freedom and convenience of our farmstand. We have no supermarket within 45 minutes of our village, so both locals and holiday homeowners are incredibly grateful for fresh, local food.
  • The Business Logic: If you had to pay someone to sit and man a farm stand, your labor overheads would completely wipe out your profit. Accepting a tiny fraction of shrinkage is far cheaper than paying an hourly wage. And you can make sales 24/7.

2. Set-and-Forget Weekly Packs (The Casual CSA)

We used to grow a massive variety of vegetables for a traditional, subscription structured vege box scheme. Over the years, we completely stripped that variety back. Too many crops went to seed early, wasted space in the greenhouse, or simply did not sell.

We learnt that just because you can grow something, doesn’t necessarily mean you can sell it!

  • Enhancing Our Core Offer: We realized our customers and commercial accounts really wanted our signature salad mix and microgreens. Instead of trying to grow everything, we decided to increase both our microgreens and our cut salad mix, offering a premium, simplified weekly subscription pack. The salad and microgreen pack maximises our highest profit crops.
  • The Process: Customers sign up to receive a regular weekly pack containing our mixed salad and microgreens. It provides steady, predictable income for us, and a reliable supply of fresh greens for them.

The Non-Market Gardener Advantage: A Creative Bundling Idea

If you are reading this and you are not a market gardener – meaning you do not grow large plots of outdoor vegetables or mixed salad greens – microgreens are still an incredible tool to elevate what you already do. Because they grow rapidly indoors on shelves, you can use them as a high-value add-on to almost any homestead venture:

  • The Weekly Gift Pack: If you sell fresh backyard eggs, homemade sourdough, artisanal soaps, or herbal tinctures, you can bundle your microgreens into a cohesive, high value weekly homestead pack.
  • Adding Value: Microgreens introduce a fresh, living element to a box of shelf-stable goods, making your existing offers feel much more premium and complete without requiring a massive, labor-intensive garden plot.

3. Shopify Online Orders and Click-and-Collect Lockers

To expand our reach beyond our immediate roadside traffic, we run a website powered by Shopify. Online ordering allows us to strictly manage our inventory so we never accidentally oversell what is currently growing on our shelves or in our greenhouses.

Some customers end up becoming regular ‘set-and-forget’ subscribed customers after they’ve casually purchased via our Shopify site.

  • The Local Locker System: Rural delivery can be tough, so we set up secure pickup lockers in two nearby villages – one about 20 minutes away, and another 45 minutes away. Both places where the owners wanted to try and encourage more customer traffic to their own eateries or shop.
  • The Efficient Round Trip: To make delivery day logistically smart, we treat these lockers as a single round trip. The first village is directly on the same road leading to the next town. We simply drive through, drop off the first batch of orders, and continue to finish the route, keeping our fuel costs and time on the road efficient.
  • The Process: On delivery day, we drop the produce into the designated locker inside an insulated cooler pack with an ice pack.
  • The Customer Convenience: Every customer receives the combination padlock code for the locker. They can pick up their fresh greens whenever it suits their schedule, whether that is after work, after picking up kids from school, or even the next day.

4. Wholesale to Commercial Cafes, Caterers and Retail Stores

Wholesale accounts provide excellent, high-volume weekly consistency. Alongside our local cafes and restaurants, we also supply a local convenience and takeaway store. They stock our salad bags in their fridge, which helps bring local shoppers into their store while giving us an extra retail footprint.

  • The Local Advantage: Commercial kitchens love our produce because it is hand-cut, minimally handled, and grown right down the road. It easily beats mass-produced, machine-cut wholesale greens that travel hundreds of kilometers in refrigerated trucks.
  • Kitchen Efficiency: By packaging our microgreens cut and ready to use, we solve a massive pain point for chefs. They can put our bags straight into their commercial chillers without spending valuable kitchen labor sifting through live trays or washing dirt out of stems.

How to Land Cafe Clients: The Generous Trial

Approaching a busy chef can feel intimidating, but a genuine, helpful approach works wonders. We never use high-pressure sales tactics.

  • The First Contact: Make a polite courtesy phone call or visit the kitchen during a quiet hour. Introduce yourself, find out who the head chef is, and ask if they would be open to trialing your produce for free.
  • Drop a Generous Sample: Do not be stingy with your samples. Give them a large, beautiful package of your cut salad mix and microgreens. Attach a professional price list created easily using free templates on Canva, clearly showing your per-kilo pricing, package weights, delivery schedule and any official food licensing numbers.
  • Let the Quality Sell Itself: By leaving a large sample, you are giving the chefs enough product to use over several days. This allows them to experience your two-week shelf life firsthand. Once they see that your greens do not turn into a slimy mess by day three, they are usually hooked.
  • The Gentle Follow-Up: Chefs are incredibly busy people. If you do not hear back right away, do not take it as a rejection. Call or drop by a few days later for a genuine, friendly follow-up. Nine times out of ten, they have been meaning to call you but simply got caught up in a busy kitchen service.

Building Relationships from the Ground Up

Always remember that business is all about people, and great service doesn’t cost you much, but has massive ROI!

Treat every single person you encounter in a commercial kitchen with respect, from the kitchen hands and dishwashers to the front-of-house staff. You never know who will end up climbing the ranks.

I recently experienced this firsthand when one of our chef customers left and one of his team, whom I’d only ever seen a handful of times, was promoted to head chef.

Because she already knew me, trusted our consistent service, and loved the quality of our product, our wholesale relationship transitioned seamlessly. Be professional, stay approachable and your customers will enjoy dealing with you.

Master Your Entire Microgreen Process

Finding the right sales channels is the final piece of your homestead microgreen puzzle.

By setting up simple logistics and leaning into community trust, you can easily turn your harvest into a steady, manageable income that fits around your homeschooling schedule.

However, nailing your delivery routes and securing buyers only works if you are consistently producing a top-tier crop.
